Donor Story

“There is no better feeling than knowing you've played a part in saving a life.”

23-year-old Kunal lives in Bangalore and loves listening to podcasts, cooking, and traveling in his free time. He is very passionate about helping those in need, and his passion led him on a journey that would not only change his life but would also make a significant impact on someone else's.

Kunal shares his inspiring lifesaving story -

“In December 2022, I stumbled upon social media posts highlighting the importance of stem cell donation in the fight against blood cancer. I registered as a potential donor with DKMS-BMST, but I thought it was a long shot that I would actually be called for a donation, considering how rare the opportunity was. Little did I know that this decision would lead me on a remarkable journey that would change my life and a total stranger’s life forever.

The motivation behind my decision was rooted in the understanding of how challenging it is for blood cancer patients, like those with Thalassemia, to find a matching donor with the exact HLA type. Organizations like DKMS-BMST streamline this process, making it quicker and more efficient, ensuring that patients receive the life-saving treatment they need.

Growing up with a case of Major Thalassemia in my environment, I was no stranger to the impact of blood-related illnesses. However, it was only after registering as a potential donor that I truly delved into the intricacies of the topic and became an advocate for this noble cause.

Before the donation

The moment I realized I could help a patient who was suffering from cancer, I was both humbled and exhilarated. Of course, like any significant decision, doubts and anxieties crept in. Communicating the importance of stem cell donation to my family and friends, who were unfamiliar with this relatively recent trend, was challenging. However, with the proper explanations by DKMS-BMST, all doubts were put to rest.

Preparing for the donation involved careful listening to medical professionals and seeking external opinions on medications. Following all the dos and don'ts, I ensured that my body was in optimal condition for the donation process.

Donation Process

The day of collection arrived, and I felt a mix of excitement and enthusiasm. This was the culmination of all the preparations and the collective efforts of many individuals working tirelessly to make the donation successful.

Post-donation, I experienced a bit of dizziness that quickly subsided, and within a few hours, my body was back to normal. It was a pretty emotional experience because I couldn’t believe I had just done something so significant, but it hardly took any effort from my end.

To my recipient, I would like to say: stay strong and positive, and welcome to a new chapter of your life. I hope you get well soon!
