Donor Story

“Your simple act of kindness could be the lifeline someone desperately needs.”

Akshay, a 27-year-old marketing professional from Karnataka, came forward to help save a life. Today, he shares his journey as a blood stem cell donor, hoping to inspire others to take the same path of giving and saving lives.

28/02/2024

I registered as a potential donor at a registration drive organized by DKMS-BMST in Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Working within the walls of a hospital, I witness the struggles of cancer patients regularly. Their increasing numbers motivated me to take this step towards making a difference.

While I haven't had a personal encounter with a cancer patient in my family or immediate environment, the plight of those battling this disease deeply resonated with me. I've always been aware of blood cancer and its devastating effects, which further fueled my determination to contribute in any way I could.

When I learned that I could potentially help a patient with my stem cell donation, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. The thought that a simple act on my part could potentially save a life filled me with hope and purpose. Of course, like any journey into the unknown, there were moments of anxiety and doubts. My family and friends initially hesitated to support my decision, but with patience and persistence, I was able to reassure them of the importance of this cause.

Donation Process

Preparing for the donation involved consulting with medical professionals, who guided me through the procedure and addressed any concerns I had.

On the day of collection, I felt a mix of nerves and anticipation. The procedure, while similar to platelet donation, was a bit more time-consuming. However, the wonderful staff at DKMS-BMST, made the experience smooth and reassuring.

After the donation

Post-donation, I experienced no side effects, and life resumed its normal course. But knowing that somewhere out there, someone was given a second chance at life because of my contribution filled me with immense satisfaction.

To my recipient, whoever you may be, I send my heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery and a future filled with health, happiness, and endless possibilities. You're in my thoughts, and I hope our paths may cross one day, even if just through the bond of this shared experience.
